The indigenous, Ecuadorian Quechua believe life and death are inseparable and continuous. Communing with their ancestors is an intimate and informal affair. The children in these photographs are as familiar with cemeteries as they are playgrounds. Like ethereal spirits, they were totally aware of my presence among them yet unbothered by me being there. It was this naivete, the transparency of their innocence, I think, that affected me the most. They were so naturally performative, so present, so lacking in suspicion, that photographing them, like falling in love, took no effort at all.
